INTERESTING PLACES IN NORTH CYPRUS

Lefkoşa (Nicosia)

Nicosia also known as Lefkosa is an excellent place to visit during your stay in North Cyprus.

Nicosia is the capital city of North Cyprus and also South Cyprus.  The border between the two countries can be found running right through the middle of the old city in a west to east direction.

In 1979 the master plan for Nicosia began even though work really only started in 2001.  This UN sponsored plan is to help restore all the important areas that are located in both North and South Nicosia.

The Gothic churches have been preserved and their towers have been augmented.  The colonial houses that once stood have been redeveloped and the newly opened Kizilbas Park is surely a place to visit!

Girne (Kyrenia)

Kyrenia is perhaps the most attractive town there is in North Cyprus and with good reason too.  Kyrenia is home to a beautiful harbour and some golden sandy beaches.  There is a fascinating old part to this city and no matter where you are staying in North Cyprus for your holidays Kyrenia City or Girne as it is locally called is a must see.

There a number of excellent buildings in the town and the most popular is the medieval Folk Museum which you can still visit today.

Kyrenia Castle

Kyrenia Castle is located at the mouth of the harbour and is the central attraction.  You can visit and explore the castle and from the top the views are spectacular.  Inside the castle you will also find the Kyrenia Shipwreck Museum where you can see the remains of an ancient trading ship that was taken from the harbour and preserved.  This is a wonderful place to visit and a definite must see during your holiday in North Cyprus.

Gazimağusa (Famagusta)

Famagusta in North Cyprus is another excellent place to visit during your holiday.  This is a medieval walled city that has plenty of places to explore and plenty of charm to offer too.

Famagusta began with a humble beginning in the 14th century but later grew to be one of the wealthiest trading ports on the Mediterranean.  The people who lived here were extremely rich and they built a number of churches and palaces not to mention a magnificent cathedral that was contained within the massive walls that surround this city.

Famagusta is still today an extremely popular destination although most people come here on day trips.  It can make an excellent base for exploring North Cyprus though and there are a number of excellent resorts located here too.  If you are planning on spending the day here you can view all the old buildings and enjoy a relaxing drink in the little cafes and bars that are nestled amongst these buildings.

Guzelyurt (Morphou)

Guzelyurt City which is also known as Morphou is located in the North West and is home to approximately 12,000 people.  In Turkish this place name means beautiful country and this is not wrong.  The stunning city is surrounded by citrus groves and their aroma is reason enough to visit especially when the blossoms are in bloom.

If you are planning a visit then you will have to stop at Guzelyurt Bay where you will find the best views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Troodos Mountains together.

There are a number of underwater springs located in Guzelyurt which help to feed and nourish the vegetables, melons, apples, and grapefruit which grow in this area.  A large portion of the fruits that are grown here are exported but the remainder are used to make fruit juice or canned fruit which is then used by the locals.

Guzelyurt is also home to the famous Orange Festival.  This is a festival that is held annually and it lasts for two weeks.  It is a major event in North Cyprus.
